Dance Styles We Teach

Latin & American & Street Latin – Argentine Tango

  • Samba

Often termed the Joy dance of Latin and American, the music creates an atmosphere of excitement and fun, and only a few basic dance steps need to be learned to enjoy the delightful dance rhythms.

  • Rumba

Rumba has a fascinating rhythm musically; once this slow romantic dance style with a few basic dance steps is acquired, dancers will get hours of enjoyment.

  • Jive

A light, bright, bouncy, lively style enjoyed by all ages that consists of easy-to-learn dance steps, with various dance moves eventually including flicks and kicks and your own expression.

  • Paso Doble

The Paso Doble music has an inviting tempo, and with simplified dance steps, beginners can enjoy this dynamic dance style. This dance expresses the role of the fearless matador and the lady's role generally as the cape.

  • Cha Cha Cha

The dance beat of the Cha Cha Cha music is very infectious – the 1 2 Cha Cha Cha is an easy-to-learn fun dance rhythm and a must for beginners and social dancers.

  • Argentine Tango

An intimate dance style of its own, invented by ordinary everyday people expressing the emotions of that lifetime era. It seems that the Milonga was the forerunner to this sensual style. For the Social dancer, the authentic Argentine Tango dance music (different to the modern tango dance music) adds to the passion of this nostalgic dance style. Four or five simple dance moves that can be danced on a small dance floor will generate the authentic original dance tango feel.

  • Salsa

Salsa is a generally accepted generic term for the musical blend of Cuban and American instrumental (hot &spicy) music. The named dance Salsa typically comprises a tap and three steps (sometimes a slight flick), occasionally no tap, combined with an opposition hip swing called Cuban motion. This dance style has many simple moves that will build into numerous combinations.

  • Merengue

The origin of this style is the Dominican Republic, and others claim the roots are In Haiti. This is a very in-the-floor earthy type of dance; one step is taken for each beat of the music, and each of these steps is taken with delayed hip action and moves separately from the upper body in opposition to the foot. This is one of the easier dance styles to learn, with loads of hip action, making it loads of fun.

Rock and Roll

Another easy-to-learn dance style with its widespread transition in the mid1950's from its original roots dating back to the 19th century. Still very popular with the young and the mature, the basic dance steps are straightforward to learn, and as for all couples dancing, the man is in charge and in control of leading.

Ballroom (Also named Modern or Standard)

  • Social Rhythm Dancing

Slow and Quick – this style of dancing is the simplest style to learn and is used for crowded dance floors and often incorporated into modern-day upbeat music used for weddings and special functions.

  • Waltz

Slow Waltz (Social Waltz) has an easy-to-hear dance beat and is quite simple and easy to master, with 9 basic steps forming the foundation of left and right turns. Joining in the waltz at social dance functions will be a breeze and certainly is a confidence booster for the beginner. Although this dance style is one of the oldest and was considered very risqué in its beginnings, it is still prevalent and is often featured at weddings—indeed, a must-learn for all beginners.

  • Foxtrot

Slow or social Foxtrot has a basic dance movement of a walk and three-step originating (it is said as one version) from its initial American Jazz era and has developed into the English Slow Foxtrot dance of this modern day. With expert tuition and a little practice, learning this dance style is a rewarding experience for the enthusiastic beginner.

  • Quickstep

The dance moves of the Quickstep consist of walks and chasses. The origins of this dance style developed from the Charleston, with many of the dance steps adjusted to suit the modern Quickstep of today. The Quickstep is a must for the beginner's repertoire. Very easy, very simple, light and happy and loads of fun to learn.

  • Tango (Modern Tango)

It is believed that Tango originated in Argentina, became popular in France and moved on to England. The Social Dance Tango has a few basic moves that create a staccato feel with the Tango dance music. Beginners will enjoy the atmosphere of this dance style and the interpretation of its fascinating dance rhythm.

  • Viennese Waltz

The Strauss Waltzes formed the Viennese Waltz of today and is one of the most attractive ballroom dances and, thus, an extremely popular style on the Social Dance Scene. Its basic dance form consists of 3 Steps – incorporating travelling turns.

  • Sequence - New Vogue (Australian), Sequence Modern & Latin & Old Time (English)

A series of dance steps grouped in succession, repeated using various dance timings from Waltzes, Foxtrots, Tangos, Quicksteps, March music, and also using the Latin Dance Rhythms – Rumba, Samba, Cha, Jive and Paso Doble, Mambo, Bosa Nova for each different named dance, performed by individual couples dancing in a circle in unison.

Social Dance promoters throughout the World use these sequence dance styles for a large portion of their social dancing programme – a popular dance style for all ages.
